Google Nest Cam (battery) and Google Nest Doorbell (battery) are the latest additions to the Nest family — and they’re Nest’s first battery-powered security devices, built for every home. Here are 11 things to know:
Smarter alerts, right out of the box: Your new Nest Cam and Doorbell can do more right out of the box because we moved object detection on-device, allowing us to include features that are usually behind a subscription (like Activity Zones and smart alerts, including package, animal, vehicle and person detection) for no additional cost, plus three hours of event video history. Thanks to on-device processing, they can also record up to a week’s worth of events if power or Wi-Fi is out.
Made with Machine Learning: Building a camera that uses ML to recognize objects requires showing the ML model millions of images first. Our new Nest Cameras and Doorbells have been trained on 40 million images to accommodate lots of different environments and lighting conditions. Thanks to a cutting edge TPU chip, our new cameras run an ML model up to 7.5 times per second, so reliability and accuracy are even better.
Works in any home: Nest Cam and Doorbell’s wire-free designs, built-in rechargeable batteries and optional power connectors allow you to install them where you want — not only where there’s a power outlet or pre-existing wiring.
Set up your way: More accessories are coming soon. In addition to weatherproof cables, a tabletop stand with a power cord allows you to place your Nest Cam on an indoor surface, like a mantle. There’s also an anti-theft mount that tethers your Nest Cam to the magnetic mount for extra security. For Nest Doorbell, there’s a horizontal wedge and an AC adapter.
Works better, together: Nest Cam and Nest Doorbell seamlessly work with your Nest displays. Just say “Hey Google, show me the backyard” to see your Nest Cam feed. And you can set up your speakers and displays to chime when someone rings your Nest Doorbell, while using your display to see who’s at the door and take action from the screen.
All on the Google Home app: It’s easy to see all of your events quickly, and your 24/7 live feed at any time in the Google Home app. If you have more than one Nest camera, you can view all of them in one place, alongside your other connected home devices. You can even filter by event type — for example, you can pull up every package delivery.
See clearly in a variety of conditions: Both Nest Cam and Nest Doorbell have night vision, 6x zoom, and HDR so images are crisp in the dark or bright light. And we gave Nest Doorbell a taller field of view so you can see visitors from head to toe and packages as close as eight inches away from your door.
Extra secure with a Google account: Your devices are only as secure as your account. That’s why the new Nest Cam and Nest Doorbell require a Google account, which comes with added protections like suspicious activity detection, 2-step verification and password checkup.
Add a Nest Aware subscription: With a Nest Aware subscription ($6 monthly), you’ll get familiar face detection and the ability to call 911 from the Google Home app (U.S. only) as well as 30 days of event video history. With a Nest Aware Plus subscription ($12 monthly), you’ll get all of this with 60 days of event video history and the option for 10 days of continuous video recording when your Nest Cam is plugged into a power outlet.
Made with care: Nest Cam and Doorbell are made with recycled materials and rigorously tested through drops and extreme weather, like heavy rain and hurricane-strength winds.
Built for your life: Nest technology is designed to fit into your home, not distract from it. Nest Cam is sleek and white and fits in anywhere — indoors or outdoors. And Nest Doorbell’s design was inspired by clean, minimalist architecture. In the U.S., it comes in four different colors so your front door can make a great first impression.
The new battery-powered Nest Cam and Nest Doorbell are available for pre-order today for $179.99. Order yours today!
Who stays in hotels anymore?
AirBnB and HomeAway have made it easier than ever to feel right at home anywhere in the world. Whether you are making your home available to earn some extra money for your next vacation or maintain a property as a short-term rental, hosting can be a lot of work. This is especially true if you're renting out a property other than your primary residence. Here are three ways August Home products can help make hosting a hassle-free experience for you and your guests:
Make check-in and check-out a breeze
One of the most challenging things about short-term rentals is working around your guests' schedules. If they arrive at 4:00 a.m., that means a groggy greeting (probably still in fuzzy slippers) or leaving a key hidden under the doormat, which is not ideal or safe. Remove any inconvenience from the equation by giving your guests the freedom to check themselves in at their convenience - connect an August Smart Lock and August Smart Keypad to your property.
By linking your August account to AirBnB or HomeAway, your guests will automatically receive temporary access to your home through the August app on their phone or through a unique entry code, good only for the duration of their stay. When they arrive they'll be able to walk right in and you'll get a notification on your phone indicating that they have arrived safe and sound.
Key-free is the way to be
Smart home technology gives guests' peace of mind just as much as it helps yours. In a recent study of AirBnB hosts and guests, Smarter Hosting with Smart Home Technology Study, guests said that losing the keys to a rental is one of their biggest worries. By turning your guest's smartphone into a smart key you'll not only keep your home safe, but also make their vacation more relaxing.
Someone order a cleaning service?
Need to get your property ready for your next reservation? Once your guests have checked out, you can provide the cleaning crew with temporary access to prepare the property for the next stay. With an August Smart Keypad linked to your August Smart Lock, you can create a one-time access code that's valid for just a few hours. Set up the code in advance or send it via text instantly. No need to get your hands dirty meeting the cleaning crew at the door to exchange keys, they'll be able to tidy up and be on their way in no time.
More smart home tech, more money
Going key-free for your guests not only makes it easier to manage check-in and check-out, it can also make your property more appealing to renters. In the same study of AirBnB hosts and guests, six out of 10 guests indicated that they would pay more for a vacation rental with smart home features and 82% of guests said they're more likely to complete their reservations when they see that smart home technology is available. Install your smart lock and update your listing and watch the bookings roll in.
Today we're announcing that Amazon Alexa now talks to the August Doorbell Cam. August Doorbell Cam users can ask, "Alexa, show me the front door" to watch live video of visitors or motion outside the door on any Amazon Echo Show.
"It's great to delight customers by adding value to the products they already own and rely on as part of their daily lives. We added the ability to control the August Smart Lock with Alexa earlier this year, which has been extremely popular," said Jason Johnson, CEO of August Home, Inc. "With the expansion of our Amazon Alexa skill, we are making it easier for our customers to control their Doorbell Cam. Now they can display video of visitors outside their door using their voice."
Hanging out with family watching TV at night when the Doorbell Cam rings, ask Alexa to, "Show me the front door camera," to view live video at the door, conveniently from the comfort of the sofa. No need to reach for a smartphone to pull up the video. August Doorbell Cam customers can use Alexa to display video on an Amazon Echo Show by enabling the August skill within the Alexa app and linking their account.
The ability to display August Doorbell Cam video on Echo Show is an expansion of the August Smart Home skill. August Smart Lock customers using the 1st generation or 2nd generation lock already use voice commands with Alexa-enabled devices to control their lock and check the lock status.
Availability & System Requirements
The ability to control the August Doorbell Cam with Alexa is available immediately through the August Smart Home skill by pairing the August Doorbell Cam within the Alexa app.
Today August Home announced August Video Recording, a companion to the August Doorbell Cam.
The August Doorbell Cam lets customers see and speak with visitors at their door, from anywhere, using a smartphone. Users know who’s at the door, even when they’re not home. Motion detection triggers alerts whenever something is happening at the front door. August Video Recording lets users replay, download and share recordings of each interaction at the front door – visitors who ring the doorbell and any motion or missed visitor such as a package delivery, all from the August app.
In conjunction with this announcement, current customers, as well as new customers who activate their Doorbell Cam by December 31, 2016, automatically receive six months of the new service free-of-charge. The service includes 30 days of video history. After the promotion, August Video Recording will be available for $4.99 a month or $49.99 for a one-year plan.
“The launch of our Digital Video Recording service signals the end of our public Beta,” said Jason Johnson, CEO of August Home Inc. “During the Beta, customers spent a significant amount of time reviewing motion-triggered, suspicious activities and viewing live, on-demand video to simply check what is going on outside their door. They shared videos of kids trick-or-treating for Halloween, and also package thieves stealing deliveries from their doorstep. This validated the power of our Doorbell Cam not only as a way to communicate with visitors remotely, but also as an important security tool.”
Johnson continued, “Offering users six months of Digital Video Recording service for free is a way for us to thank our customers for their loyalty and encourage new customers to experience how smart security products like our Doorbell Cam will provide peace of mind and bring new convenience.”

The rise of online shopping has also led to a rise in package theft. As billions of packages are now shipped to our doorways each year, millions are stolen before their rightful owners can see what’s inside. In fact, about 23 million Americans had a package stolen from their homes just last year.
There are many ways to prevent package theft, but unfortunately, sometimes it’s unavoidable. If you had a delivery stolen from your doorway, here are four steps you can take to refund or recover the missing package.
1. Confirm It Was Actually Delivered
Delivery companies process thousands of orders every day, so there’s bound to be a few oversights. Just because you got a delivery confirmation from your courier, it doesn’t mean the package actually made it to your doorway.
Before you file a theft report, contact the delivery company to confirm that your package was dropped off when their tracking services said it was. If you’re lucky, there may have been a mistake, and your package may still be on the way.
2. Check With Neighbors
Some delivery drivers will choose to leave your package with a neighbor if they feel like it’s a more secure option. Some people will even go out of their way to store their neighbors’ packages to keep them safe. And of course, sometimes your packages are just delivered to the wrong address.
Ask your neighbors if they received your package or if they saw it being delivered. Hopefully your package is in safekeeping with a neighbor, but if it isn’t, they may be able to provide some information regarding its whereabouts.
3. Contact the Sender
If you’ve confirmed that the package was delivered but is now likely stolen, the first thing you should do is contact the sender of your shipment.
Many retailers will work with you to rectify issues with lost or stolen shipments. Some retailers will even choose to refund or replace your purchase immediately and deal with the delivery company themselves, taking a lot of the legwork and stress off your plate.
If the package was sent by anyone other than a retailer (i.e. a friend, family member or office), reach out to the sender to confirm that the address was correct and everything else was in order. Unfortunately, if the stolen package was sent by a friend or family member, you may have little chance of recovering your stolen goods, in which case you’ll have to file a theft report.
4. File a Theft Report
If you’ve gone through all the steps outlined above, and you still haven’t found your package, your delivery is most likely lost for good. Unfortunately, the only thing you can do at this point is file a theft report with your delivery company.
Today we are announcing a new integration with Nest enabling the August Doorbell Cam to work in sync with the Nest Cam to detect and record motion activity inside and outside the front door. Now, both camera views are available together in the August app for a more contextual view of motion activity and greater peace of mind over the security of the home.
“Video is a powerful aspect of smart security in the connected home. The integration with Nest lets our Doorbell Cam and Nest Cam work together to bridge the gap between activity happening inside and outside the home,” said Jason Johnson, CEO of August Home Inc. “As we evolve the August Home experience for customers, we will continue to work with leading smart home innovators like Nest to bring Smarter Home Access to life.”
The August Doorbell Cam lets consumers see and speak with visitors at their door, from anywhere, using a smartphone. Nest Cam is an easy-to-use Wi-Fi-enabled security camera with cloud service that lets people stay aware of what’s happening at home, no matter where they are.
August Doorbell Cam and Nest Cam work together to show Nest Cam video animations that happen just before or after a visitor rings the doorbell. This includes any information about Activity Zones that have been created to tell Nest Cam to pay closer attention to motion in specific areas. Users can now see the video activity as one complete view, all from the August app.
The August Smart Lock already works with Nest Cam and the Nest Learning Thermostat. Users can view a video animation taken from Nest Cam each time someone enters or exits the home. Users can also set the status of their Nest Thermostat to Home or Away each time the door is unlocked or locked and view the temperature from the August App.
