Control4 Driver - Philips Hue

What are the Requirements for this driver?

• Control4 OS 3.4.3 or higher. X4 is supported

• Control4 HC-XXX Series controllers are not supported

• Bridge V2 or Bridge Pro (recommended). Bridge V1 units are not supported.

• Philips Hue Software Version 1955082050 or later is required. Earlier versions will fail to connect properly.

What practical and compelling use cases does this integration enable?

• Battery-free keypads and switches: Select first-party and third-party Hue keypads, referred to as dimmer switches in Hue terminology, are entirely battery-free. They harvest kinetic energy from the button press to transmit Zigbee commands. A standout example is the Senic Outdoor Switch, which is IP-rated for external use. Installation is straightforward: mount the switch, pair it to the Hue Bridge, and it is immediately operational.

• Expanded motion-sensing options: Battery-powered motion sensor options within Control4 are limited. Philips Hue significantly expands this capability by offering both indoor wireless motion sensors and outdoor-rated motion sensors. The driver streamlines automated lighting workflows using motion detection in combination with ambient light (lux) levels through driver properties.

• Door and window contact sensors: Philips Hue also provides battery-operated door and window contact sensors, enabling additional automation and occupancy-based logic without the need for hard-wired sensors.

• Room-level lighting control and scenes: The driver supports room-level lighting integration to eliminate popcorn effects during transitions. Full scene execution is also supported, enabling smooth, coordinated lighting behaviour across the space.

What is Friends of Hue?

Friends of Hue is a Philips Hue partner program for third party manufacturers that create products designed to integrate tightly with the Hue ecosystem.

Products that carry the Friends of Hue label are officially certified by Signify and meet specific technical and design requirements.

Within the Friends of Hue range, keypad switch products leverages batteryless or energy harvesting technology and do not require a replaceable battery to operate. Instead, they generate the small amount of electrical energy needed for a Zigbee transmission from mechanical action (such as pressing a button), ambient light, or other environmental sources.

What is Hue MotionAware?

MotionAware is an innovative feature available exclusively with the Hue Bridge Pro. It transforms your Philips Hue lights into motion sensors by creating a Motion area using 3 to 4 lights in a room. This feature allows you to control any lights when motion is detected or use it as part of a security system by sending alerts if motion is detected, triggering light alarms, etc.

Philips Hue lights communicate with each other using Zigbee. MotionAware measures fluctuations in wireless Zigbee signals, which occur when something (like a person) passes through them. This technology allows Philips Hue lights to detect motion without the need for additional sensors, cameras, or physical installation.

The Chowmainsoft Philips Hue driver for Control4 will integrate motion areas that have been pre-setup and calibrated into Control4 as a virtual motion sensor.
